HOMEMADE CANDLES
Want to add some cozy to your morning routine? You’re going to LOVE this super simple DIY!
(So many of you are asking about my lamp! I am obsessed. It has 2 different light settings and it is USB chargeable! This will definitely cozy up your morning or evening routine.)
WHY NOT JUST BUY A CANDLE?
We stopped using candles, wall plug-ins, air fresheners, and wax melts back in 2017 when I learned how toxic they were, and only diffuse PURE essential oils in our home, and the change is drastic.
Eliminating toxins from your home even one little step at a time, can have huge impacts on your respiratory and endocrine system. Now when we walk down the candle aisle in Target we immediately get a headache from the synthetic fragrances.
HERE’S THE SUPER EASY RECIPE
If you’re new here, this might be the only blog that won’t make you scroll for the recipe haha! You’re here for the good stuff, so let’s go!
SUPPLIES:
- small jars or mugs
- candle wicks: I used these for my mugs that are about 3-4 inches tall. Just be aware of the wick size to the jar size. A too thin of a wick could not burn strong enough to melt the wax evenly. So you might need two of a thiner wick per candle. Or a too large of wick could burn to strong and burn the jar. *AVOID lead wicks*
- natural soy wax
- PURE essential oils: here’s my fall favorites and my holiday favorites!
- something to hold the wick in place, I didn’t spend any money on a fancy device and just used a fork!
STEP 1: pour soy wax in a pot. I am so sorry I didn’t measure lol! I would say I added a few cup and melted down more as needed (it melts fast)
STEP 2: melt down on medium to low heat, we do not want to boil it. You’re supposed to watch and stir, but I was watching a Hallmark Christmas movie and I never stirred lol. I just watched it and it slowly melted perfectly.
STEP 3: While you wait for your wax to melt, I hot glued the base of the candle wick to my mugs. There are also candle wick sticky tabs you can get, but I just used what I had on hand…the hot glue gun my children have taken great care of😵💫
This is what it will look like!
STEP 4: Use something to hold the wick in place. When you pour the wax, the wick will fall away to the side. You can buy wick holders to hold in place, but again, I used what I had on hand. A plastic fork worked great! (A regular fork might be too heavy)
STEP 5: Pour your wax in! I DO NOT add essential oils to my melted wax. Scroll down to see why.
STEP 6: let it sit over night. Once a few hours passed and it was getting solid, I took the fork off out, but you can for sure leave it all night.
STEP 7: Here’s the fun part! To cozy up my morning routine I really wanted a safe, non-toxic option for a candle in the fall and winter. These little things are what we can do to be intentional in how we enjoy the seasons! (for example: in the spring I like fresh cut flowers on the table, in the summer I like a fresh pitcher of lemonade and tea out at all times)
Each morning I grab an essential oil I want to use, this morning it was Christmas Spirit! When the melted wax mixes with the essential oil, the cozy aroma is so yummy! Every day I can pick a different blend, kinda like if I was diffusing!
What oils would you pick?
I tell you, I am hooked on these! I can’t wait to hit up the thrift store for some nostalgic mugs or even dig through my holiday mugs! The possibilities are endless and best of all, you can make them festive for every single season of the year! Happy safe-non-toxic-candle making!

You can use a different oil every day? Do you drop it in the melted wax? Yesterdays scent won’t be mixed with what you choose today?

Hey Belinda! I do use a different oil every day, but you could use the same if you prefer! Each days oil dissipates out as I use it so I don’t really notice the smell the next day! You could always just add the essential oil to the melted wax before you pour too if you prefer!
